A departmental survey indicated that villagers turned to the forest for fuel and fodder. With the experiment drawing unexpectedly good response, the pressure on the protected area has decreased remarkably, say forest officers. To discourage villagers from cutting wood for use as fuel around Gir, the forest department gave one family and LPG cylinder and a stove. Nearly 8,000 families have since joined the campaign for LPG.
