A fire in the tinder-dry forests of eastern Arizona raced through a hastily abandoned town, chasing firefighters off the line and prompting the evacuation of thousands of residents as it quickly grew to 85,000 acres. "This is a monster," said Jim Paxon, a U.S. Forest Service fire information officer. The fire roared through the upscale vacation community of Pinedale. Fire information officer Jim Anderson said "more than a few" homes had burned, but he said officials probably won't be able to start assessing the damage until early Friday.
