First Swine flu case confirmed in Hyderabad

A 23-year old youth belonging to Hyderabad was tested positive for the H1N1 strain of virus that causes swine flu. This is first confirmed case of swine flu in the country. The test was conducted by the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) in New Delhi and the report was delivered to the Government Chest Hospital here on Saturday. Speaking to the media, Chest Hospital chief pulmo-nologist Subhakar said the youth travelled from New York to Hyderabad on May 13 and was admitted to the Chest Hospital in the early hours of the same day as he was suffering from running nose and fever. His throat swabs were sent to the NICD and the report came today. According to the doctor, the youth is now stable and would be discharged after five days. He would then not be a carrier of the virus, he clarified. He would be kept in isolation during the five days. After that, he would be given symptomatic treatment, for fever or cold or both.
