Fish farmers demand compensation

PARADIP: Leakage of acid water from the Paradeep Phosphates Limited (PPL) pipelines has posed a threat to the aquatic life affecting the livelihood of over 500 fishermen here. Sources said due to the leakage acid water from gypsum pipeline of PPL entered into rivers, creeks and prawn gheris in the area six days back.
Dead fish were reportedly seen floating in the waterbodies due to the leakage following which, farmers have started demanding compensation for the dead fish.
The Fisheries Department officials conducted an inquiry about assessment of loss and studied the environmental impact on water bodies. Though the exact amount of loss to the fishermen is yet to be ascertained, it is being currently estimated at `50 lakh.
District Fisheries Officer Pabitra Kumar Behera said fishes in the Kaudia river had died due to leakage of acid water from the PPL pipeline. He added that earlier 24 acres of waterbodies were severely affected due to leakage of oil from IOCL pipeline.
Vicepresident (Operation), PPL, Ranjan Basu said the company was in touch with the district administration over the leakage issue and compensation would be provided to the affected fishermen after final assessment by the Fisheries Department.
