Fisherfolk launched an indefinite protest on Monday to express their outrage at the official laxity in resolving the issues related to those displaced from the Krishnapatnam port area. Leaders of the fishermen forums declared that they would not relent till all their demands were addressed by the government. To emphasis their sorry state of affairs, the fisherfolk also brought pots and vessels and started cooking food on the premises of the fisheries office in Nellore town. The CPI(M) district secretary, Mr T.P. Bhanuraju, offered his party's unstinted support to the stir undertaken by the fisherfolk. The Fishermen Association general secretary, Mr Chinni Rajagopal, criticised the officials for ignoring their travails. He alleged that the livelihood of the fishermen was seriously affected because of the lack of a fishing harbour. The administration failed to address any of their demands. "We are struggling to survive," said Mr Rajagopal. The general secretary urged the officials to conduct a survey immediately to identify an alternative place to set up a harbour and asked them to provide a special package for the displaced. He also demanded compensation to all people whose livelihood was affe-cted because of the port.
