Authorities said yesterday that the samples of five popular milk powder brands which came under the microscope in Singapore for possible contamination of melamine had come clean.
While identifying the five brands as Kotmale, Maliban, Nespray, Anchor and Diamond, Minister Bandula Gunewardene who is incharge of Trade, Marketing Development, Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs said yesterday that authorities were awaiting reports on 10 other brands.
Citing the report released by the ALS Laboratory in Singapore, the Minister said that no contamination was found either by Melamine or any other harmful substance in any of the above products by officials.
According to the report these products had conformed to the production compositional requirements and were fully safe for human consumption, the Minister added.
Responding to a query by a journalist at the media briefing yesterday regarding the ban on a chocolate company and the controversy regarding a popular brand of biscuits, the Minister said that he could not comment on the subject as there was an ongoing Court case. However, we have taken all necessary steps to ensure the safety of dairy and other products and the public would be informed immediately regarding any contamination, the Minister assured.
However, according to sources no milk powder which is in circulation in the Sri Lankan retail market is being imported from China where the Melamine scandal originated.
However, Authorities are currently investigating on the possibility of contaminated Chinese milk powder being used in other productions in Sri Lanka such as biscuits and chocolates. Melamine is a powder used in plastic-making it is also used in the production of Formica, floor tiles, whiteboards and kitchenware and also gloves and cloth material.
