: Five more people died of gastroenteritis in Luddan area during the last three days. Reports said the people were getting contaminated water because of mixing of a sewer line with water supply pipe. The deceased were identified as Allah Rakha, 40, Farah Bibi, 5, Jannat Bibi, 60, Asif, 5, and four-year-old Muhammad Ali. A total of six people had died of the disease during the last four days while dozens were still under treatment at the Rural Health Centre (RHC). Dr Akram, who was present for the last three days in the area, told Dawn that 89 people were affected due to gastroenteritis and dehydration. "At present two dozens are under treatment while others have been discharged from the RHC. A few have been referred to Vehari hospital.' He said during the last three days about 1,500 people had been vaccinated at the medical camp. Dr Akram claimed that only three people died of gastro during three days. He said others died of heart failure. When this correspondent contacted EDO (health) Dr Jamil, he said a health team was providing all the required medicines in the affected areas free of cost. On the other hand, some of the affected families said non-availability of medicines at the camp caused deaths. Dr Akram said people died from self-medication and their families did not contact the hospital or medical camp. Meanwhile, residents have urged the respective authorities to provide clean drinking water to the locality.
