Five new road projects for Maoist-hit districts

BHUBANESWAR: The Centre has sanctioned five new road projects worth Rs 465 crore for five districts of the State, worst hit by Left wing extremists and an additional assistance of Rs 179 crore for improvement of 122 km length of roads in Malkangiri district, the hotbed of Maoists. Replying to the demand discussion of Works Department on behalf of the Chief Minister, Revenue Minister SN Patro said that the Centre has approved the State Government proposal for construction of five roads (324.38 km) in Malkangiri, Rayagada, Gajapati, Deogarh and Sambalpur districts. Tendering process for three roads had been completed. Patro said that the Government had submitted Rs 174-crore proposal to the Centre for development of 71 km length of road in Malkangiri district. Of the 1,219 km stretch of Vijayawada- Ranchi road, work on the 320 km was taken up and 112 km completed with an expenditure of Rs 145 crore. While the total project cost has been estimated at Rs 1,929 crore, the Centre has released Rs 331 crore and the State Government has given its share of Rs 168 crore, he said. He added that the Centre had sanctioned Rs 40 crore for two road projects under the economic importance scheme. The project to be taken up on 50:50 basis, the Government has planned to develop 66.68 km of road from Naranpur to Pandapada in Keonjhar district. The Government has planned to construct six railway fly-over bridges, including three in the city, in the current financial year. While the three flyovers in the city will be at Lingaraj station, Mancheswar, Saheed Nagar, the other three will be at Sora-Markona level crossing and Simulia level crossing and Managovindapur level crossing. "Besides, proposals are pending for construction of fly-over bridges at CRP Square, Rasulgarh Square, Vanivihar and Link Road in Cuttack," the Minister said. Admitting to the four-laning of NH under Golden Quadrilateral programme to have considerably slowed down, Patro said the incomplete portion will be completed by 2011.
