Five vultures were found dead on the outskirts of a village in Viramgam taluka. Preliminary information suggested that the vultures died four days ago, after feeding on goat's carrion. Four of them were white-backed vultures and one was a long-billed vulture. These species fall under the Schedule I category of Wildlife Protection Act. On Thursday night, the dead vultures were brought to Van Chetna Kendra of the forest department in Vastrapur in Ahmedabad. Deputy conservator of forest (DCF) Amit Kumar told TOI, "The exact reason of the death of these vultures has not yet confirmed. We will send their bodies to the veterinary department in Anand for post-mortem.' Sources say that these vultures had died four days ago but it was only on Thursday that the incident came to light. "There is an urgent need to establish a special hospital for the treatment of these endangered species as the threat to their existence is increasing day by day. We need more infrastructure for their conservation,' said wildlife photographer Mukesh Acharya. Diclofenac, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), given to cattle in their last days, is the main cause of death of vultures who feed on their carcasses.
