A shower that was among the briefest of the season swept away the tall claims and the ambitious projects of the Guwahati Development Department within hours. Once again the city today reeled under urban floods. The rains that fell measured 2.9 mm, but the disruption caused was immense. With the various agencies involved in maintaining drainage systems and adjoining hills apparently having failed to learn their lessons from the recent urban floods, city life again was seriously disrupted with arterial routes transformed into massive drains, and traffic coming to a standstill. The busy GNB road, ironically close to the Water Resources Department, was blanketed by waist deep water in stretches. Small vehicles by the roadside had to be abandoned, and even some bigger vehicles were stranded amid the floodwater. Incidents of flooding were reported from several other roads, including the RG Baruah Road, MG Road and the GS Road, where traffic movement was also affected. A few minor accidents due to waterlogged roads have been reported. The rise of the water level in various roads and residential areas revealed the utter inadequacy of the city's drainage system. A senior official supervising urban water management said, "such floods would be a recurrent feature if there was no co-ordination among the various agencies involved in managing the city's drainage systems'. At present there were at least four agencies working in the area of drainage. Significantly, today's floods also underlined the need for foot overbridges in select parts of the city. With such facilities non-existent, pedestrians could not cross over roads, which were covered by knee to waist deep water. Even after the rains, some roads continued to hinder traffic and pedestrians as large stretches came to have deposits of red soil, which the rains had brought down from nearby hills with no green cover.
