Flood affects around 6,000 people in Rajshahi

: With continuous onrush of floodwater from upstream for more than a week, the Padma river has now become closer to its danger mark affecting around 6,000 people and devouring 273 dwelling houses in the district, reports BSS.
Control Room officials closed to Water Development Board here said the water level has been raised by three centimeters in 24 hours. The river was flowing only two centimeters below of the danger mark of 18.5 meters at 6 am on Monday.
In the wake of continuous rising, the floodwater have started engulfing dwelling houses in the char areas under Paba, Godagari, Charhat and Bagha upazilas of the district marooning many people. Standing crops on hundreds acres of land have been flooded. The farmers are being forced to sell their domestic animals in low price.
Nazrul Islam, Chairman of Haripur Union Parishad under Paba Upazila, says floodwater have entered many of his localities areas like Char Mazar Diar, Bashari, Nabaganga, Sonaikandi, Berpara and Kasba. More than 600 dwelling houses have, so far, been affected. Standing crops on 2,000 bighas of land were inundated.
Amid swelling of the river, six to seven points of the city protection embankment have become risked. Officials of the WDB are working round the clock to face the risks.
Haripur UP Chairman, Mofidul Islam, says more than than 300 families have become marooned in Char Khidirpur and Khanpur besides massive erosion.
Abdus Sobhan, UNO of Bagha Upazila, says more than 1600 families have, so far, been affected by the flood in his upazila.
Around 2,000 families in char areas of Godagari Upazila have become homeless, said SM Tuhinur Alam, UNO of Godagari.
Meanwhile, Mojibur Rahman, District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer, says Tka one lakh in cash was distributed among 200 flood affected people and 27.520 metric tons of rice were given to 2,163 people as food assistance for the last couple of days.
“We have also sought 1000 bundle of corrugated sheet, Taka 31 lakh and 1,000 metric tons of rice for post-flood rehabilitation purposes,” he added.
