Flood Control Board approves Rs 2,850 crore

BHUBANESWAR: The State Flood Control Board today approved projects worth Rs 2,850.83 crore to contain floods and create more irrigation potential for the farmers. The projects approved at the meeting presided over by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik include the Salandi Sanskara Project, Bramhani-Kelua-Birupa Doab projects and 121 other small projects. While the Salandi project has been estimated at Rs 933.16 crore, the Doab project will cost Rs 62.67 crore. The project costs of the small projects will be Rs 1,855 crore. The projects were referred to the board after getting clearance from the technical advisory committee. The Salandi Project has proposal to strengthen the 80-km-long embankment. Besides, new embankment of measuring 30 km will be constructed under the project. The 142-km-long link drain will also be renovated. Official sources said that the river mouth of Subarnarekha will be dredged 10 km to deepen it. Flood control measures in Balasore and Mayurbhanj will be improved by construction of 23-kmlong strait cut, sluice and foot bridge. Measures to save the Doab reason situated within Bramhani, Kelua and Birupa rivers in Jajpur district were discussed. The 86.49 km river embankment will be strengthened besides construction of new embankment of 15.63 km. Besides, 56-km-long roads will be constructed under the Doab project to make communication easier. Main and link drain of 37.5 km will be renovated. The board also approved 121 small projects to cater to the needs of almost all the districts. Digging up canals will primarily be taken up under these projects. These projects will be posed before the Centre for financial assistance. The board was informed by the officials from the Water Resources Department that the Centre has been requested to declare the Rengali river dam project as a national project so that it will get more financial assistance. Among others, Finance Minister Prafulla Chandra Ghadei, Pratap Keshari Deo, Prashant Kumar Muduli (both MLAs), Chief Secretary TK Mishra and senior officials attended.
