Flood scene in Lakhimpur improves

The overall flood situation in Lakhimpur district improved today with floodwaters of the Ronganadi, Singara, Dikrong and Kakoi receding to a great extent. However, the fresh announcement of the NEEPCO authorities to release water from the Ronganadi Hydel Power dam has sent alarm bells ringing in the district. Both Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts are cut off from the rest of the State for the fourth day today, as the about nine-metre deep breach in NH-52 at Ganesh Udyan is yet to be repaired. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today visited the flood-affected areas of Lakhimpur and Bihpuria Revenue Circles and distributed ex-gratia amounts among the next of kin of the three persons drowned in the floodwaters. Former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta today met the Union Minister for Water Resources and submitted a memorandum to him demanding a CBI enquiry into the allegations of large-scale corruption in the construction of embankments in the State. He also demanded steps to save river island Majuli. Our North Lakhimpur Correspondent has reported that the announcement of the NEEPCO authorities to release water from the dam came immediately after the return of the Chief Minister from the flood-ravaged district. Earlier, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had made a public statement stating that an enquiry would be instituted in to the alleged release of water by the NEEPCO at Yazali in Arunachal Pradesh. People of the district alleged that the release of water by the NEEPCO authorities had led to the deluge in the district. The ASEB has restored power supply to North Lakhimpur town today after a 36-hour-long operation. In the face of the deluge, the Education Department has postponed the half
