Flood situation continues to be grim

The flood situation continues to be grim as large swathe of area remained inundated after rains lashed large parts of the state in last 48 hours. Many schools have been turned into relief camps. Villagers are being evacuated from villages and shifted to these camps. "Situation is very bad in Barabanki and Gonda where Ghaghra is in spate. The swollen Ganga river has submerged many villages in Muzaffarnagar, Bijnore and Meerut," Government spokesman said here on Sunday. He said water, released from Haridwar at the rate of 2.54 cusec per second, has inundated 54 villages of Purkai Khadar area of Muzaffarnagar district and 10 villages in Hastinapur area of Meeurt district. Unconfirmed reports claim that Sherpur embankment has collapsed in Muzaffarnagar while Fatehpur embankment is in bad condition. According to the data of Central Water Commission, the level of Ghaghra is increasing in Faizabad and Gonda and is flowing above the danger mark while Saryu is flowing below the danger mark in Ayodhya district. Reports claim that 74 villages in Deoria, eight in Shravasti and 83 villages in Gorakhpur are affected by flood. Officials claim that ration and other dry food materials are being distributed among the flood victims. Where it is possible to open BPL centres the officials are asked to distribute ration from those centres. "Over 250 boats are pressed into service and PAC's flood unit is on full alert evacuating people to the relief centres," he said. In Farrukhabad, Union minister for corporate and minority affairs Salman Khurshid visited this flood affected district and distributed relief materials among the flood affected people. Meanwhile, the weathermen said that monsoon has been vigorous over western UP and active over eastern UP. Very heavy rain occurred at isolated places including Agra division. The Met department has predicted light to moderate rain/ thundershowers during next 48 hours in the state.
