The flood situation in Sivasagar district seems grim as the water level of all the major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, has been rising up to the danger level in recent days. The percentage of rainfall also seems rising and in the last few days, rainfall has been continuing in the district. Meanwhile, the Dikhow River which flows from Nagaland becomes an additional cause of flood as in Nagaland there has been rainfall continuously for about one week. The Dikhow, Desang and Jhanji rivers are flowing above the danger level in many places. Apart from this, the Deopani, Namdang and Kaliapani rivers are also full of water which causes flood in Gelakey, Deopani and Borshill areas in the district. The mostly affected areas under Sivasagar Water Resource Department jurisdiction are Desangmukh, Dikhowmukh, some parts of Konwarpur, Betbari, Bokota, Sukanpukhuri, and an additional part of Nazira subdivision is also under water in recent times. The villages which were damaged by this year’s first flood were Deopani, Namdang poria, Changmaiting, Gohainpukhori gaon, Na-pam Baruoti and few others. Besides, 20 more villages were also reportedly affected by flood and about 22 hectares of paddy land had gone under water for which the rice cultivation has been damaged. Apart from this, there have been reports of danger in many embankments of Dikhow and Dihing rivers under Sivasagar district. The weak embankments cause sleepless nights and fear among the villagers who live on the banks of Dikhow and Desang rivers. In Dikhowmukh, Bharalua, Krishnachiga, Khanamukh, Aphala, Janamiri Gaon and many other places, the danger of weak embankments and also heavy erosion has caused fear among the people. The Sivasagar district administration and Water Resource Department are keeping a close watch on the flood situation and are ready for rescue and relief operation when the situation demands, said district administration sources on Thursday. Besides, the Indian Army and CRPF unit of Sivasagar district are also ready to conduct all supportive operation to rescue the flood-hit victims.
