Flood situation remains grim in Barpeta

BARPETA, Sept 3: As a result of continuous rainfall during the last 10 days, the flood situation in Barpeta district remains grim. With Brahmaputra and its major tributaries flowing above the danger level the flood situation in the district continued to assume dangerous propositions.
According to the Water Resource Department sources of Barpeta the water level of Brahmaputra has risen to 42.50 meter which has exceeded the danger level by 1.20 meter and the level has been showing a risen trend continuously.
Beki, Nakhanda, Mara Chawlkhowa and Bhelengi river also shows a rising trend with 45.27, 38.74, 38.69 and 36.17 meter respectively while Manah, Pahumara and Kaldiya indicates falling trend till the filing of this report.
On the other hand, Brahmaputra waters is fast advancing towards the embankments in Bhogerpar, Santipur, and Pajarbhanga area, leaving the security of people of more than 50 villages in utter jeopardy.
In Santipur and Phulbari erosion takes very critical dimensions and there is only around 20 feet between the river and the embankment.
Moreover Phulmara has also become vulnerable in Kalarguri and Karoikhawa where 2/3 has been washed away with possibility of further erosion.
Till now around 200 villages with two lakhs of population have been affected as reports of inundation of fresh areas are pouring in. The worst affected areas are Kalgachiya, Barnagar, Sarthebar, circle area and riverine areas of Chenga and Barpeta circle. According to the official sources as many as 19 villages are affected by flood in the Barpeta circle. The district administration is getting ready with 20 boats (both machine boats and country boats) for rescue operation to face any emergent situation. If rain does not show any sign of cease the flood situation is feared to detoriate in the coming days.
