Flood situation worsens, 13 districts hit, 2 dead

The overall flood situation in Assam further worsened on Monday with all the major rivers flowing above danger mark. A total of 3.73 lakh people in 774 villages across 13 districts have been affected by the current spell of floods. Further, 15,235 hectares of cropland have been inundated. Meanwhile, two persons have lost their lives, though unofficial death toll has been pegged at three. One Pallabi Narai (2) of No. 2 Mudaibil village under Panigaon police station in North Lakhimpur drowned, Dipika Barman, a student of class I, died in Panikhaiti due to landslide induced by torrential rains. On the other hand, Shamser Ali (2) of Sontoli in Kamrup district is reported to have drowned in a pond due to flood. Further, the body of one Mahendra Deka (52), who was missing since Saturday, was recovered from Dimaru in Nagaon district. The deceased hailed from Kaki in Nagaon district. The districts that have been affected by the current spell of floods are Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Biswanath, Karimganj, Sonitpur, Cachar, Darrang, Hojai, Majuli, Barpeta and Nagaon. Flood situation is still critical in areas under Naoboisa assembly constituency, while 20 villages in lower Majuli are still under floodwaters. The flood-affected people have taken refuge in higher grounds along with their livestock.
