Floods affect 33,000 persons

The heavy rainfall during the past few days have affected at least 33,222 people from 7,848 families while three persons died in Kegalle, Gampaha and Matale as a result of floods in districts including Rathnapura, Gampaha, Kegalle, Colombo, Matale and Kandy.
According to the Director of the National Disaster Relief Services Centre (NDRSC) N.D.Hettiarachchi the Government has already provided sufficient relief assistance including an allocation of Rs.500,000 from the Ministry of Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services.
He said around 17,151 people from 3,937 families in Ayagama, Elapatha, Ehaliyagoda, Kalawana, Kuruwita, Kiriella, Rathnapura and Pelmadulla in the Ratnapura district were affected by floods due to torrential rains in the past few days.
Nearly 5,870 persons from around 1,234 families, were affected by floods in Dehiowita, Ruwanwella, Yatiyantota and Warakapola in Kegalle district. Several areas in Colombo including Hanwella and Kaduwela had also been inundated affecting 1,345 persons from 291 families.
Meanwhile, around 8,854 persons in Gampaha district were affected by the rain. Around 247 houses including 226 houses in Kegalle and 21 houses in Ratnapura have been partially damaged while 17 houses including 16 houses in Kegalle and one house in Matale have been fully damaged.
"There are 270 families in three Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Gampaha district,' he said. Meanwhile several roads in Akuressa and Kamburupitiya of Matara district have been submerged disrupting transport in these areas.
According to the Meteorology Department, there will be showers at several places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces. Thundershowers will also be developed at a few places in the North Central, Eastern and Uva Provinces during the afternoon or evening.
