The Disaster Management Centre at Anuradhapura has given flood warnings to residents near Kala Oya tank in Anuradhapura. The Anuradhapura District Disaster Management Coordinators yesterday said the people in the areas around Kala Oya have been asked to vacate flood-prone areas to avoid potential risks. Director General of the Disaster Management headquarters at Colombo, Gamini Hettiarachchi said that minor floods could be expected in several areas of the country if the rains persist. Meanwhile, it has been reported that several lowlands around Nuwara Wewa (reservoir) have been inundated by the floods damaging a number of unauthorised structures including houses and commodity shops. Many areas in Galnewa, Kekirawa, and Ipalogama divisional secretariats were affected by the floods, Disaster Management Chief Hettiarachchi said. The reservoirs, Nuwara wewa, Maha Kanadarawa and Vilachchiya are exceeding their water levels, sources at the Centre said. Several sluice gates of Naachchaduwa, Kalawewa and Rajanganaya reservoirs have been opened, they said.
