The floods showed no signs of abating in Ghatal, Sabang, Daspur, Pingla and Dantan blocks of West Midnapore with the Subarnarekha, Kapaleswari, Keleghai and Silabati rivers in spate. Though the water level of Silabati river is receding very slowly, there is bad news for Ghatal as the Rupnarayan is in spate. Most of Daspur areas are waterlogged and outbreak of waterborne diseases is a cause for worry for the district health department. This has forced them to undertake a review and depute medical teams to the affected areas. A high-level meeting was held at the district headquarters here recently chaired by the chief medical officer of health to take stock of the situation. Some cases of diarrhoea and dysentery have already been reported from flood-ravaged areas which are waterlogged for the past few days and the figure is rising. Besides, a few cases of acute respiratory infection with fever have also been reported from some areas. Doctors and other medical staff are striving hard to combat the situation.
