5% of Maine, plenty of trees : Hundreds of millions of dollars worth of forest, a swath that is about 5 percent of the land in Maineis is for sale in the northern part of the state, prompting a debate over the future of the heavily logged yet alluring woods. Conservation groups have called for selling the land to the public to restore it to its original wilderness. As paper companies liquidate their land holdings in the Northeast to raise money for their mills, millions of timbered acres from Northeastern Maine to the Adirondacks of New York are either for sale or being considered for sale, making their availability one of the latest conservation issues in the region.
