In spite of the Government's formal statements to the contrary, forced labour remains widespread in Myanmmar, says Juan Somavia, Director-General of the International Labour Office (ILO) in a report dispatched to members of the ILO Governing Body on 21 May. The report "regarding measures which the Government of Myanmar has taken to comply" with its obligations under international law, states that none of the recommendations made last year by an ILO Commission of Inquiry "have yet been followed".
