The forest cover in India has increased by six per cent since 1999. The total forest area is now estimated be 38.245 sq km says a Union government report. This is a step forward in achieving a target of having a forest cover of 33% in the country by the end of 11th five year plan, as set out in the national forest policy of 1988.
