The Administration has taken a number of steps to reduce timber cutting in the Tongass National Forest America's largest in Alaska. The constraints are a welcome improvement on past policy which was too lax. Proof of their virtue may be the fact that the state's powerful congressional delegation already has attacked them for going too far. But the reality, despite the possibility that they could be held in abeyance in the coming appropriations cycle, is that they don't go far enough.
