Forest on 2.5m acres planned in two years

The provincial government of Lahore, Pakistan plans to bring over 2.5 million acre of land under forests during the next two years. This was stated by Forest Minister Malik Salim Iqbal while addressing a news conference on Monday. The new initiative, involving an estimated investment of Rs 25 billion, is designed to increase land under forest from 2.8 per cent to 8 per cent, he added. He said the initiative was finalized after an elaborate exercise, including a three-day workshop held at Lahore recently. Four models were formulated at the workshop in the light of recommendations made by the participants, including farmers, industrialists and foreign investors, he said.
