Despite the Mamata Banerjee led-government's thrust on development in the Maoist-hit Junglemahal areas, the state government's performance in granting forest rights to the tribals there is highly disappointing, said former minister and PCC leader Dr Manash Bhuniya today.
Dr Bhuinya alleged that 30,000 applications have been submitted since the Tribal Forest Act 2005 came into force. But so far, only 3,000 applicants have received forest rights, though the chief minister had made “tall claims” about giving the tribals the same, he alleged.
He said the UPA-I government had introduced this Act to benefit the tribals. The Left Front did nothing and the Trinamul Congress, too, is not making much progress, may be, due to more dependency on bureaucrats, Dr Bhuniya alleged.
He said the tribals of Lalgarh are a much aggrieved lot. They also want to know where the then officer-in-charge Mr Sandeep Sinha Roy has been posted by the Trinamul administration. Mr Roy was held responsible for injuring Chitamoni Murmu and several other tribal women. He ransacked two villages after the Salboni blast.
He said the Maoists took advantage of the situation at that time and spearheaded their movement. He claimed that it was due to Central funding and deployment of Central force that the situation was brought under control.
Mr Sisir Adhikary, MP and former Union MoS for rural and panchayat affairs said: “We can see how effectively the Centre is able to control Maoists movement in Chattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha and parts of Maharashtra where only once a week mails are delivered, rural markets are open, people, even government officials, do not go out of their houses even during the day.''
He said state Congress leaders only make statements in television but do not have block-level contact.
