KOLLAM: Based on the Forest Rights Act approved by the Union Government, forest rights committees will be set up in the district on August 3. A meeting chaired by District Collector A.Shajahan has taken a decision in this regard.
The Act envisages to provide rights on the dwelling places of those people, including Scheduled Tribes, in the forest land in which they had been living traditionally.
According to the Act, a 10-member forest rights committee will be set up. Of this, six members will be elected from Scheduled Tribes. The rest may be elected from other communities. But there is no objection in electing all the 10 members from the Scheduled Tribes.
Three of the Scheduled Tribe members should be women. Two women will be elected from other communities. Election will be held at the grama sabha from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Committees will be set up in ward numbers 6, 11 and 19 of the Kulathupuzha panchayat, ward no. 5 of the Chithara panchayat, ward numbers 1 and 5 of the Aryankavu panchayat, ward numbers 2 and 9 of the Thenmala panchayat and ward numbers 1 and 3 of the Piravanthoor panchayat.
Election will be held from the grama sabha of 'oorukoottams' (tribal settlements) who had been living in the forest for three generations and having enrolled in the voters' list. Tribals having crossed the age of 18 will be included in the list. Ahead of the election, mike announcements and notice campaigns will be held.
