Foresters train for wildlife census

Jamshedpur: As many as 150 forest officials, including guards, rangers and assistant conservators, today participated in a training programme to prepare them for the forthcoming wildlife census in the state. Field director of Palamau tiger project, Manoj Singh, taught the participants how to count both herbivorous and carnivorous animals in the forests of Kolhan during the three-day wildlife census beginning April 19. This time, the wildlife census will be a little different from the earlier ones. The wildlife authorities will map the animal habitats beside counting heads in the jungles. According to divisional forest officer of Dhalbhum A.T. Mishra, on April 19, a preliminary census will be carried out, followed by the main one on April 20 and 21. The DFO said each of the forest divisions would be divided into units and sub-units. Mishra, who attended the training programme, said census activity would start from 5am and continue till 6pm on all three days. During the training programme, Singh specified how fast the participants would have to walk in their respective units during the census. He revealed that those engaged in the census will have to walk from one direction to another along the
