Forests cover about one-quarter of the world's land surface, excluding Greenland and Antarctica. Just over half of these forests are found in developing countries. Global forest cover has been reduced by at least 20 per cent since pre-agricultural times, possibly by 50 percent. Nearly all forests in Europe and the United States are under some degree of management.
