New Delhi June 25: In a move which otherwise in political circles is considered a prelude to the formation of a new state, the Centre has asked the Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh governments to constitute special authorities dedicated to Bundelkhand regions of the respective states. At a recent meeting with the senior officials of the Uttar Pradesh government, the Planning Commission asked the state to form such authority with an intention to "dovetail" resources reaching the state for the upliftment of the Bundelkhand region. "Since the Uttar Pradesh government has an act to constitute a special authority so they have assured us to get it done soon. We are going to call a similar meeting with the officials of the Madhya Pradesh government and are going to ask them to replicate UP model for the region," Planning Commission member B.K. Chaturvedi said. When asked pointedly if the authority is not a prelude to the formation of a separate Bundelkhand state out of UP and MP as people are already agitating for this and even UP chief minister Mayawati has once supported the idea of formation of four states out of Uttar Pradesh, Mr Chaturvedi said the present move is only to have an administrative mechanism to ensure "dovetailing" and better managing the resources which are reaching the region. If at all a decision on the state would be taken in future, it would be taken at the political level, he added. For the past several years, the Bundelkhand region, which forms part of both UP and Madhya Pradesh, has been suffering from severe drought and acute water crisis. Even reports of "water riots" have occasionally been pouring in from the situation. Sensing the alarming situation in the region, the plan panel has also formed an internal committee of experts, with officials also drawn from rural development and water resources ministries, to formulate a strategy to combat the crisis. "As we have found the problem of the region can not be solved by only giving package, the committee has been constitute and is asked to submit its report within one month. Resources are there and, if needed, more funds can be released," Mr Chaturvedi said.
