S. Prakash Menon, State president of the Hi-Way Action Forum, has said that any attempt by the government to forcefully acquire land under the guise of a new package for the development of the National Highway will invite stiff resistance from landowners. No details The government had not cared to provide details about the National Highway development programme to the people. No study had been conducted on the social, economic, and environmental impact of the programme. The National Highway development programme was seen to be carried forward unilaterally for the benefit of the BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) contractors alone, he alleged. No consideration was being given to the “victims” of the highway development programme. Things would be more transparent if the programme was made into a Centre-State joint venture instead of the BOT project. Undue haste Under the BOT programme, officers of departments concerned were showing undue haste in implementing the project. If things were not transparent, the scheme would pave the way for big-time corruption, Mr. Menon alleged. No study held on impact of the scheme, forum says No consideration being given to 'victims'
