In order to introduce the latest technology to the farmers in the island, a hydroponics system has been installed in the island of Hulhudhoo in Seenu atoll. The project is being carried out by the Agriculture Ministry in collaboration with the Hulhudhoo Island Office and four hydroponics systems have been put together and installed on the island. According to the Hulhudhoo Island Office, the first batch of vegetables, lettuce leaves, were planted on Saturday. In addition, they were going to hold workshops to introduce those interested to the technique of growing plants in water instead of soil, the Office said. "Those who are interested in learning about the new available technology now have a chance of doing so,' the Island Chief Ahmed Musthafa said. The manual work for the project had been done by a society from the island called Sallihi. The Island Chief said that the society had been assigned the task because they had previous experience in agriculture and farming. There was also an agreement made with the society to give some percent of the profits from the venture to the Island Development Committee. "They are working alongside two field-officers sent by the Ministry,' he said. "The main aim is to create awareness about the technology and to generate interest in it. Using four systems means that every week we will be able to harvest lettuce leaves from one.'
