Bharuch: Four peacocks were found dead near Suki river at a Dhavdi village in Nan-dod taluka of Narmada district. Forest department confirmed that two had died on Wednesday and two on Thursday.
The mysterious deaths were reported by locals on Wednesday to Kevadia range forest office when they saw five to six peacocks lying unconscious near Suki river.
"When our team reached spot, two had died and two were struggling to breath. We called veterinary doctors and tried to save birds, but in vain," said HV Patel, 'range forest officer, Kevadia.
Forest officers have sent the bodies for post-mortem. Forest department officials informed TOI that they have rescued one peacock, which was also found ill from the same region. It is being treated at Kevadia forest hospital.
"We started a search operation for ill peacocks in the area, but could not find more," said Patel. Farmers in the area have been advised not use excessive pesticides.
Forest officials confirmed that they were not poisoned, but the reason behind the death will be, clear only after the postmortem. A veteran bird watcher of Bharuch, Kirti Solanki, said: "As the summer sets, birds suffer from dehydration. Last year, many peacocks had died in Bundi village of Rajasthan."
