The State Government has proposed four urban development projects for Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai, under the newly launched Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. The total cost is estimated at Rs. 1,050 crore. The Centre will fund 35 per cent of the cost for Chennai and 50 per cent for Coimbatore and Madurai. The State Government's assistance has been fixed at 15 per cent for Chennai and 20 per cent for others. The rest has to be mobilised by the implementing agencies. Official sources say the projects have been submitted to the Centre. Some formalities have to completed before the Centre sanctions funds. A memorandum of agreement (MoA) will be signed by the Centre, State and the implementing agency. Development plans will be drawn up for each city.
