France keen for technical cooperation with Delhi

French Transport Minister Dominique Bussereau called on Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in her office here on Wednesday and expressed his country's keenness to establish technical cooperation and collaboration with Delhi in various fields. Pointing out that tramways have been successful in various French cities, Mr. Bussereau offered possible funding assistance to undertake a detailed survey and study for commissioning of tramways in Delhi, which he said would go a long way in making the public transport system here more reliable. The visiting Minister also evinced keen interest in infrastructural development projects relating to the upcoming Commonwealth Games in 2010. He complimented the Delhi Government for its role in extending the green cover, successful commissioning of the eco-friendly Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) mode of public transport and the Delhi Metro railway. Mr. Bussereau apprised the Chief Minister of initiatives being taken by the French Government to curb pollution including free bicycle service, electrical cars and hybrid cars. "France would take over as chairman of the European Union on July 1 this year,' he said. The Chief Minister apprised the visiting French Minister of the administrative structure of Delhi. "Our Government is committed to developing public transport system in such a way so as to encourage people to make use of the public transport in large numbers and stop bringing their private vehicles on roads which are getting congested by the day. One-fifth of the area of Delhi is covered by roads,' she said, adding that the Delhi Metro railway would cover a length of 270 km during the next two years. The concept of mono-rail and light rail was also being considered, she added. Ms. Dikshit spoke of the need for integrating different modes of public transport and said her government was keen to extend the green cover in Delhi.
