France's tree avenues under threat

The classic French image of a twin row of plane trees stretching across the countryside is in danger of disappearing because of mounting claims that they are to blame for the country's high death rate on the roads. The avenues, for three centuries a cherished part of the rural landscape, have already been drastically reduced as a result of road improvement schemes, but now for the first time a government minister has joined the campaign to have them cut down.
