For the past several years, the economically deprived slum dwellers in Madhya Pradesh were having a field day with "free electricity" being doled out to them by the State Government being used blatantly for cooking food on electric stoves. But since this facility has now been withdrawn, the trees that have come up in the cities as part of social forestry and other environment related programmes are being hacked, girdled and chopped on a massive scale to meet the growing demand for fuel wood.
