Patna: The flood situation in seven northern districts of Bihar further worsened on Monday with swollen river waters inundating fresh areas, even as the death toll mounted to 14.
Three more people, two in Purnia and one in Darbhanga, drowned on Sunday taking the toll in the current spell of floods to 14, official sources said.
According to an official report, swirling waters affected scores of villages under Bahadurganj, Terhagachhi, Dighalbank, Kochadhaman, Bahadurganj, and Potahi in Kishanganj district.
More than 50 villages were affected by floods under Palasi, Jokihat, Araria, Forbesganj and Kursakata block in Araria district. Many villages were submerged in Banmankhi and Krityanandnagar blocks in Western Purnia by turbulent Kosi which was steadily eroding its embankment, the report said.
Swirling waters of the Adhwara group of rivers inundated the national highway near Khirma village in Keoti block, causing temporary suspension of vehicular traffic.
Minor drowned
Lucknow: An 11-year-old boy on Monday drowned in Balrampur district of Uttar Pradesh, taking the toll to 18 in the State. Sufian drowned in flooded waters in Balrampur, where the Rapti river was flowing above the danger mark, official sources said. River Ghaghra, which was flowing above the danger mark in Ayodhya, had touched the red mark in Ballia, the Central Water Commission said. Ghaghra was receding in Elgin Bridge (Barabanki) and stable in Katarnia Ghat (Bahraich) where as Rapti was rising in Bansi (Siddharth Nagar).
In central UP, Ganga was rising at Kanpur, Dalmau (Rae Bareli) and Fafamau (Allahabad), it said. In Basti district, over 80 villages were flooded leading to evacuation of as many as 1,020 families to safer places, the sources said.
In Siddharth Nagar district, over 90 villages had been submerged as police and PAC were deployed for relief and rescue operations in flood-hit areas.
1,300 families hit
Malda: An estimated 1,300 families were marooned as swollen Fulhar, flowing over danger mark, flooded vast parts of Malda district on Monday. Several villages under Chanchol sub-division were submerged as water gushed in following a wide breach in the Bhaluka guardwall, which had been built after the concrete embankment over the river gave way, a district official said. Most parts of Harischandrapur II and Ratua blocks were flooded as Fulahar continued to submerge nearby areas despite fall in its water level from
