Fresh wave of flood claims three in Assam

Guwahati: The current fresh wave of flood induced by incessant rains since August 28 has so far claimed three lives in Assam while affecting over 7.35 lakh people from 1597 villages in 56 revenue circles spread over 18 districts in the State, according to reports from Assam State Disaster Management Authority. The mighty Brahmaputra River is flowing over the red mark at Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Tezpur and Dhubri while any of its tributaries are showing a rising trend and flowing above the red mark in any places in the state. Flood has create havoc in Dibrugarh and Dhemaji towns in the state while standing crop over a spread of 1.18 lakh hectares has been inundated by the flood. In many places roads and embankments were over topped by flood water snapping surface communication. The districts so far affected include Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Jorhat, Kamrup, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Goalpara, Morigaon, Nagaon, Baksa, Cachar, Udalguri, Nalbari and Darrang. Over 51,000 flood-hit are lodged in 168 relief camps set up by the government so far. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday has directed to provide immediate relief to people affected by floods induced by excessive rains in the State. Reviewing the situation arising out of increasing water levels in the Brahmaputra and the Barak and their tributaries in different districts of the State, Gogoi directed the officers to keep constant vigil over the situation and take immediate remedial steps. Gogoi reviewed the flood situation at a meeting at the conference room of his office in Assam secretariat where he directed the state machinery to provide all possible help including relief materials to the affected people. Gogoi also directed the Chief Secretary VK Pipersenia to ensure that communication is not snapped due to flood and all efforts should be initiated to restore communication. Gogoi also enquired about rising water level and amount of rainfall likely to occur in the next 48 hours and asked different departments especially PHE and Health to take necessary steps. Moreover, a direction has been given to send engineers to Dibrugarh to assess the situation and find a way out including a master plan for drainage to bail the town out of flood as a fall out of rising water level in river Brahmaputra that flows by.
