Advances in the technology of fuel cells are bringing the alternative power source closer and closer to being ready for commercial application. One of the biggest advances recently has come at a 10-kilowatt class experimental power plant operated by Japan's Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI). The plant has now been in operation for more than 10,000 continuous hours using molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFCs).
