In India, it is common to have forest fires. But if you think it is a natural phenomenon, think again. As per a WWF-India report, almost all forest fires are caused - intentionally or unintentionally - by humans. The irresponsible attitude of those residing in and around forests has started taking its toll. According to the Forest Survey of India, about 50 per cent of the nation's forested area is fire-prone (it's 33 per cent in some states to 90 per cent in others), with about six per cent prone to severe fire. While about 1.45 million ha of forests is affected by different types of fires (mostly surface, sometimes crown) annually, the forest ministry's forest protection division puts the figure at 3.73 million ha, which is 4.9 per cent of the total forest cover). Keeping in mind only the cost of regeneration, it leads to a financial loss to the tune of Rs 4,400 million a year.
