KOLKATA, 27, JULY: Ramakrishna Mission has sunk six tubewells in the Aila-affected areas in South 24 Parganas using the Statesman Calamity Relief Fund. Three tubewells have been sunk in Chotomollakhali, Bazarpara, two in Kumirmari and one in Amtali in South 24 Parganas under the Aila cyclone relief project taken up by the RKM.
The average depth of the tubewell is 922 feet with a 4 inch outer cylinder. To avoid the problem of inundation of flood water, each tubewell has a 7 feet platform. In the recent past, the RKM has taken up extensive relief work in Assam, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Utensils, saris and dhotis were distributed among the victims affected by the heavy storm in Assam. Dal, edible oil, utensils and blankets were distributed among the Lalia victims in Andhra Pradesh.
The RKM's Belgaum centre in Karnataka has taken up construction of houses in Belgaum and Raichur districts for the victims of the 2009 floods.
