Shandong Province in western China was once covered with forests. Efforts to restore vegetation in the area was taken up by The Green Earth Network, a Japanese-supported project to restore vegetation in the province. And after years of repeated trial and error, the researchers seems to have found the answer : fungus. When seedlings of certain kinds of pine trees are grown in soil mixed with the spores of certain types of fungi, the trees grow more than twice as fast.
