Gambia: Another Oil Spillage At Bamba Tenda-Yelli Tenda Crossing Point

Lrr — A Senegalese vehicle with registration number TH- 6248 E on Monday caused a massive oil spillage at the Bamba Tenda-Yelli Tenda ferry crossing point in the Lower River Region. Speaking to Daily Observer shortly after the incident at the site, Lamin Saidy, the regional disaster coordinator said the incident happened when the vehicle was disembarking from the ferry. According to him, during the process of disembarking from the ferry, the rear of the vehicle hit the ram, thus leading to the spillage. He added that the truck was loaded with 34 thousand litres of burnt oil and that all of the loaded oil poured on the ground spreading two kilometres. Saidy said this is not the first time that such incident had happened in the region, recalling that a similar occurrence took place in 2013. He however thanked the Mansakonko Area Council, the security committee, the National Environment Agency, the National Disaster Management Agency and The Gambia Ports Authority for their quick response to the situation. Sarja Ceesay, the regional environmental officer for LRR described the incident as serious, adding that the spillage has already started to affect the eco-system, saying that within the affected area some crops have already started to die. At the time of going to press, officials on the ground were preparing for a cleanup of the affected area.
