The president of the Republic, His Excellency Sheikh Prof Alh Dr Yahya Jammeh Babili Mansa and his government have been applauded for providing clean portable drinking water to the Kombo South coastal community of Gunjur, which has a population of over 21, 000 inhabitants. The applause was made by the chief of Kombo South District, Aja Janneh, who spoke to the Daily Observer recently in an exclusive interview. It came a few weeks after the Vice President and Women's Affairs Minister; Her Excellency Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy commissioned the water project, financed at a tune of US$5M. "The only thing we can do for President Jammeh is to pray for him and his government for what he is doing for the people of Kombo South District and Gunjur village in particular," Chief Janneh, a native of the village told the Daily Observer. He said this important life-changing development in the village has come to fulfill a long yearned desire of the village that had been depending on wells as their only source of drinking water for the past 400 years. "Thanks to Babili Mansa's 20-year rule we are now enjoying full access to portable drinking water," Janneh remarked. He used the interview to renew 'Gunjurians' support to President Jammeh and his ruling Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC) party for the rapid development brought to the village and Kombo South District in general. He said the Gambian leader knew the problem of the community, thus the reason for his well calculated interventions. "This is why he (President Jammeh) provided us with this water project, which is timely. He has also constructed a quality coastal road network for us and this has given our people the convenience to go to work in Banjul and come back home without staying away from their families for the whole week," he added. Chief Janneh informed that since the official inauguration of the said water project, people have been rushing to the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) to apply for water meters for their compounds. "This is all happening because of the concern President Jammeh has for the people of Gunjur, and with the help of the Almighty Allah, we will give our support to him (President Jammeh) in all areas of his development agenda," he said. Janneh argued that Jammeh is doing what is expected of a leader, saying his government's interventions have not been selective on the basis of party lines. He said the people of his area will always support the Gambian leader's development initiatives, and will not be a party to anything that contravenes his vision and ideas for a more developed Gambia. Similarly, the chief also eulogised the managing director of NAWEC and his staff for a "job well done" in making sure that the project was completed on time. The Kombo South chief stressed the need for Gambians to give support to Jammeh's comprehensive development programme for the country.
