The government of The Gambia through its National Environment Agency (NEA) has warn against human activities posing a serious threat to the environment including pollution and unlawful littering. The NEA is the public agency responsible for the protection of the environment in The Gambia including her ecological system as well as ensuring public sanity. In a report seen by the {African Press Agency} on Sunday expresses concern over “increasing waste discharges into public streetsâ€ which is against the country’s anti-littering law. Nobody has ever been prosecuted in The Gambia for flouting existing laws on littering and other forms of environmental pollution. The report says waste water discharged on public streets had the highest number of registered cases since 2013, followed by solid waste deposition. It also indicated that pollution of the environment especially from activities that generate noise, and smoke has increased over the past few years. The report also revealed the issue of septic tank leakages into streets and called for urgent action if the environmental challenges are to be reversed. However, the NEA report also indicated that the practice of constructing septic tanks along public streets has gone down considerably.
