Gambia, Italian firm sign waste management contract

The Gambia government on Tuesday reached an agreement with an Italian company, GPM Corporation Limited, for the construction of a fence at Bakoteh dump site, the main waste dumping site in the Greater Banjul Area (GBA).According to officials, the contract is the first phase of a €2.5 million waste management project, focusing mainly on the rehabilitation the Bakoteh site in the Kanifing Municipality. Aside from Tuesday’s agreement the Kanifing Municipality under the leadership of Mayor Yankuba Colley, said it will also use part of the money to pay for cost of consultancy for the designing of a five year waste management strategies for the municipality. The signing of this contract came at a time when the Country is intensifying its efforts in the tackling environmental hazards, with the latest being the total ban on the use and importation of plastic bags into the country.
