Even after more than a decade of its launching, the multi-crore costing Gangadhar Irrigation Project is lying abandoned causing severe hardship to thousands of poor farmers of the Greater area. Located at Unjan Petla village of Asom-Bengal was launched under the supervision of the Dhubri district branch of the State Irrigation Department. Due to the apathy of the authorities concerned the project has been lying idle for the last 14 years causing immense trouble to the farmers of the vast areas of the district. It may be mentioned here that to facilitate the crop area covering 420 hectares, the villagers for Ujan Petla Part - I, Bishkura Ujan Petla Part - II, and Madhya Petla villages under Golakganj LAC of Dhubri district, the scheme was launched in 1977 and it started functioning in 1985. Though the farmers for these areas were benefited from the scheme from 1985 to April 5, 1994, unfortunately, it collapsed due to the breaking down of its transformer on April 6, 1994. Since then, the project has been lying as nobody's child. Due to the alleged negligence of the staff here, the high - powered motors, Pipes, Pukka drains in agriculture fields, including the machine house have been destroyed. Some of the machines were also stolen by the miscreants people here have alleged. It is also reported that the office assistant and the four muster-roll workers appointed by the department for the scheme have been drawing their monthly salaries sitting at home. Even though the State Government had acquired 82 bighas of agricultural land for the project, the respective landowners here has alleged that they are yet to receive their amount from the Government. Despite repeated appeal to revive the multi-crore project for uplifting the agricultural scenerio here, the authorities concerned has turned a deaf ear towards them. Expressing serious concern over the problem, the people here have severely criticized Asom Minister for Irrigation and Abu Taher Bepari, MLA, Golakganj LAC, for their silence. The people here have alleged that even after submitting a number of memorandum, the minister is maintaining silence over the problem. Meanwhile in a fresh attempt for the revival of the project the people here have threatened to launch an agitataion if the Government failed to revive the project soon.
