A man died while many people were hospitalized due to gastroenteritis in Luddan on Wednesday. A gastro patient, Noor Ahmed, 50, was being taken to Luddan rural health centre (RHC) but he died just before reaching the RHC. A dispenser told Dawn that scores of gastro patients were brought to the RHC. The health department has established a camp in this area and started vaccinating the people. Health Executive District Officer Dr. Jamil told Dawn that over 50 patients were treated in the camp on Wednesday where four doctors and paramedical staff had been deputed. He said that water samples had been collected and sent to laboratory for chemical examination. Dr Shahid Saleem, medical superintendent of the DHQ Hospital, said that few patients of food poisoning and dehydration were also admitted to the hospital on Wednesday. However, locals said that underground water was not fit for humans' consumption. He said that departments concerned had already been informed, but they had not taken any step to provide clean drinking water. Dr Tariq Mehmood Tahir of the DHQ Hospital has recommended drinking boiled water and eating fresh fruits and vegetables instead of meat.
