VASCO: Town and Country Planning Minister Vijai Sardessai on Tuesday informed that he would issue directions to the contractor engaged in the Western Bypass road work to hire the services of geologists to find out whether there would be any impact on the Konkan Railway tunnel or to the environment, due to unscientific cutting of the hill at Consua in Cortalim.
He was speaking to reporters after inspecting the Consua hill cutting site along with Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha and other government officials on Tuesday.
“Presently the site looks like a football ground and it requires benching, terracing, planning and restoration of land, after the excavation completes. We cannot leave the excavated site as it is and to resolve the issue I have decided to call the project contractor and suggest the services of geologists to ascertain the impact on railway tunnel and to the environment due to excavation and also to find out how much depth they can excavate the hill,” he said.
At the same time we should also understand that completion of Western Bypass is also important but it can’t be at the cost of destroying the environment of some other area. We have to find a balance between environment and development, he added.
Meanwhile, raising her objection against the hot-mixing plant at Consua hill, Cortalim MLA claimed that the hot-mixing plant was installed without permission from State Pollution Control Board.
She said that pollution from the hot mix plants needs to be controlled as the Consua residents would be forced to face pollution. To this Sardesai assured that he would also take up the matter to find solution of the same.
